Gavern Framework – Features

Gavern Framework – Features

"Features" tab in Gavern Framework is well - developed in comparison with previous templates. From now on, it includes options divided into four thematic groups.

Logo type Management

The first group of options is connected with logo types management on the page. We added options which allow to choose logo types with media manager component use from administrative panel directly.

A user may choose 3 logo types:

  • Main logo of a page
  • Logo used in printable version of a page
  • Logo visible as page's favicon

When it comes to main logo, a user can specify whether it is displayed in the form of images or as text. In the case of setting "Logo type" option as text, values of "Logo text" and "Logo slogan" options also have to be specified.

If a user do not choose any images as logo, there will be default value used - image logo.png from images/ catalog. Regarding logo type to print, there will be used print_logo.png from the same catalog and, when it comes to favicon, there will be favicon.ico.

So a user may use a traditional method of changing logo – by replacing images or using images placed on the server.

Page footer elements

The second group contains three options connected with page footer support:

  • Style switcher – used for switching on/off links which change page's coloring (if a template given uses it)
  • Framework logo at the bottom – allows to switch on/off Gavern Framework logo under the page footer content
  • Copyright – thanks to this, page footer content can be specified

Google Analytics Support

The third group is connected with one option only – identifiers received from Google Analytics. Thanks to presented earlier the form of creating rule lists, it is possible to add a few identifiers used with Google Analytics scripts.

Overwriting selected page elements

The last group of options – rule lists used on some page elements.

Thanks to Font-size switcher option, we can switch on/off script to change font size on all subpages. Additionally, "Font-size switcher on pages" rule list allows to switch on/off this script on subpages chosen. Below, there is an example, in which, a script of font size change will be switched on for com_content component and menu position having ItemID 256:

And the inverse situation; a script will be switched on All subpages except com_content component subpages and menu position having ItemID 256.

In the similar way, we can manage subpage suffixes. If we want to define a suffix which appears as body class element, it would be enough to use "Suffixes for pages" option. As an example, we are presenting set K2 suffix for all subpages K2 component:

And the most interesting option; possibility to change module position style. As we remember from article about Gavern Framework layouts, styles of particular module positions are defined in $GK_TEMPLATE_MODULE_STYLES table. Thanks to this list, instead of modifying module positions styles manually, a user may change module position style from administrative panel very easily (it is extremely useful when we have a few styles of the same template used for subpages chosen).

Below, there is an example where for user1 and user2 positions "none" style is set:

I just did my first fresh install of Joomla 1.6 tonight, just to see what it looked like. Its pretty nice, and for me looks very different than 1.5--a little overwhelming at first (in a good way, though, lol). I'll be excited when I can slap my first Gavick template built for 1.6 on it and get it looking better than the standard Joomla default templates.

The Gavern enhancements really sound amazing and I'm now even more excited!

Thanks Gavin, we're all very excited!

I think you should add the feature width and height in pixels for the main logo.

It's really annoying to change the template_css every time.

My fear is that all of this framework talk and J1.6 upgrade will only delay templates that are already delayed on a monthly basis. We have been burned in the past by dates that were not met, so I remain cautious. Keep up the good work though!

I have to agree with Enes on this one. The new framework looks good, but you really need to have a dedicated site like Gantry that actually shows example templates of the features. It's nice to have all of these features, but I really need to see a real-world example that showcases the features.
