Is it possible to remove the mainbody / component

At the moment my test website is build up from menu's and galleries. When I don't show any joomla articles on the frontpage the place where the articles are shown is a with box with grey lines around it.

Is it possible to remove these lines from the frontpage or is this a fixed module that cannot be removed?
