How to add new Module positions in T3

I am wanting to add new module positions in this template, but I have no idea how to do it. THe architecture confuses me, and I can't find any documentation online, or find people who have done this.

Would anyone please elaborate in a step by step kind of way ?

I know I have to add the positions inside the templateDetails.xml file, and then create the positions ...

But there is this code that says $tmpl->getLayout () ...

WHere is that pulling from ?

I know this is not rocket science, so it definitely can get done.

There has to be a source that gives a demonstration somewhere on how to add module positions with joomla sites using t3 .. like the Black and White template from Gavick ( which is what we are using ).

Does anyone inside Gavick have a demonstration that they can point me to ?

I want to add two new columns suspended outside the body, and I want to make these columns ad zones for an application that we are featuring there.

Help please ...
