I want to try another template but i don't want to lose my current template settings etc. How do I go about trying the other template using quickstart and not losing anything. I know data is saved though datbase but i just want the design and module layouts safe.

You can always use free Akeeba Backup to backup your current installation (please look at this tutorial >> http://www.gavick.com/magazine/home/ite ... ba-backup-–-security-copy-and-a-portal-move-in-a-few-minutes.html) and then try new template via quickstart installation. If you want to restore you previous site you can do it via akeeba kickstart.

I see two different version one free one paid will the free version allow me to do what i want? I just want it confirmed from someone who knows about it or has used it. I just want to be able to go back to my site if i don't like the other template.

Please look at this tutorial. Free version of Akeeba backup is sufficient to make this whole process.
