Modules left1 and left2 not working?

Hi,

Is it possible that there is a problem with the left1 and left2 position? I can't publish anything to it.

I want to have two columns underneath the slideshow, not just one.

The Featured module is published on the left_top position so according to the demo page anything on "left1" and "left2" should go underneath but that is not happening (the module simply doesn't display so for now I put them under the "left_bottom" position). See this image of what I am trying to achieve.
