We installed bikestore from a quickstart and we still need to configure mail function. How to do so without configuring sendmail server, which may be a difficult and time-consuming task?

If You refer to mail configuration in "Global Configuration - Server" section , use PHP Mailer and provide all necessary data like You would use to configure mail client.

I get the following error in apache's error.log:
Code: Select all
sh: /usr/sbin/sendmail: not found

Do I have to install this sendmail program?

Yes. Here are my mail settings:

Do you see anything wrong there? BTW, I cannot make "sendmail path" empty. Every time I try this and click save it appears there again.

Its very strange. Do You use hosting company server (dedicated/shared/etc) or its your own server?
If hosting company, maybe they can give You the path to sendmail?
Also - I would ask on a global joomla forum about that problem, as it is not related with our templete, but with joomla core functions.

We have our own server, which has no sendmail installed, because we have decided that configuring it is too time-consuming.

Ideally we would like to use Google SMTP Servers for mailing, but we still have "sh: /usr/sbin/sendmail: not found" error. We've found some similar questions on some forums:

http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p=2703878
http://www.sanjib.org/using-gmail-smtp- ... in-joomla/
http://docs.joomla.org/How_do_I_use_Gma ... _server%3F

Sometimes people say that they had to install google authentication plugin for joomla or enable openssl module in apache. Do you do any of this kind of stuff in your quickstart to make mailing work?

Sadly this is not an issue of our template or plugin - its core joomla mechanism, and it would be best, if You would ask this question on joomla forum - there are people might help You better.
