Interesting problems with GK5 news on main page

So I've run into a few issues setting up the template but overall nothing crazy.

My one issue I can't seem to find a solution on is as follows: When changing the titles on the news Image
as seen, the default (prechanged) view where it was "collapsed" or "closed" aka small till one of the "tabs" are clicked no longer happens. It stays fully expanded on fresh load of the home page.

I originally tried updating the site to 3.3 and found that it broke a number of the extensions that came with the original quick setup. When I attempted to update them they broke further see http://backup2.thephoenixrepublic.com/ I've tried updating it on that backup, as well as just loading the previous "settings" it had. (the way to modify those tabs is broken unless I update gk5, and if updated it destroys the format that the template had, as well as importing the old format doesn't restore it to what it originally was *its broken*)

The solution I found to get it to behave correctly along with just about everything else is to install Joomla 3.2.4, I then don't have the login issues involved in 3.2.0 (the template comes with this version), and don't have the extension broken / keep the formatting of it like breaks when I update to 3.3

Any thoughts? I can live with it being auto extended from fresh load, but would much rather have it collapsed, till expanded via interaction.
by the way, 3.2.4 doesn't break the expansion IF I don't modify the tabs, but as soon as I modify the tabs (I ONLY change the header name) it sticks in the full expanded state.

Oh by the way, I completely forgot, I have it functional on 3.2.4 at backup4.thephoenixrepublic.com
if you're interested in seeing it on your end. Also if you need backend access to either backup2 or backup4 to see the differences between GK5 working on 3.3 and 3.2.4 just let me know!
