Widget Rules tablet/smartphone option is wacky!

Under Widget Rules: if i chose the smartphone only option, the widget will display on an iphone only in the "vertical position". As soon as I switch the iphone to the "horizontal" position the widget disappears!! The only way to get the widget to appear on an iphone both in the horizontal and vertical position is to select "Tablets and Smartphones" in the widget rules. The problem with this is that now you can't get a widget to appear differently for an iphone and an iPad separately (that is unless you want to give up the horizontal position for an iPhone). See this for yourself: go to http://drshawnadarou.com on an iPhone. Notice the search widget appears in the vertical position but disappears in the horizontal position. Any explanation/fix for this?
