I can't login to admin backend -all I get is a blank white page. I was doing some work on the site and checked the home page which was messed up a bit so I shut down the site. Now I can't get back in as only a white page shows. I'm running Joomla 3.3 with the latest gavick modules and News 2 template. The site is online behind a protected directory.

From an internet search, a suggestion was made to add the following to the index.php file after the first line to show the errors on the front end:
ini_set('display_errors', TRUE); error_reporting(E_ALL);

It shows a ton of errors like:
Strict Standards: Non-static method NSP_GK5_Thumbs::createThumbnail() should not be called statically in /home/world/public_html/cw/modules/mod_news_pro_gk5/tmpl/com_k2/view.php on line 96

Strict Standards: Non-static method NSP_GK5_Thumbs::translateName() should not be called statically in /home/world/public_html/cw/modules/mod_news_pro_gk5/helpers/gk.thumbs.php on line 212

Strict Standards: Non-static method JApplicationSite::getMenu() should not be called statically, assuming $this from incompatible context in /home/world/public_html/cw/templates/gk_news2/lib/framework/helper.layout.php on line 205

Strict Standards: Non-static method NSP_GK5_Thumbs::createThumbnail() should not be called statically in /home/world/public_html/cw/modules/mod_news_pro_gk5/tmpl/com_k2/view.php on line 96
and more...

I'm not sure how to resolve any of this. Can you help, please.

Please configure your server according to Joomla! requirements and disable display_errors option in PHP configuration. Tutorial how to do it you can find here » Quickstart Installation Problems and How to fix them – GavickPro Documentation

I don't have access to php.ini myself but I did add the line
ini_set('display_errors', 0); to the index.php file but it didn't seem to make any difference.

Lots of the other things didn't apply in my opinion. Somewhere I saw a note about changing browsers from my usual Firefox. That worked and the site displayed properly in Chrome. It seems the No-Script Firefox add-on was the problem. After disabling it, everything was fine with Firefox. My experience with No-Script is that it's more trouble than it's worth.

Anyways thanks for getting me started on a solution. I also found out that when you move an Akeeba backup from an online site to a local host, you have to remove the ,htaccess file before you can access the site as it contains online links.

Ok, so the problem was related with your particular browser configuration yes?
