FTP details when I install theme

I am installing this theme for a client. For the first time ever, I have been asked for FTP details in order to install a theme? Why? When did this change? What is the need for this? Why can I not just install a theme that I just bought? And what if my client does not have FTP details?

Is this with just this theme or all Gavick themes? If it is in/with all your themes I would not have bought the theme ...

FTP details are necessary if you want to install the quickstart package (yes, for all our thems) - because you have to upload the wordpress files with our theme, content and configuration:

If you want to install only theme files - you can do it without FTP (Appearance -> Themes section), but in this case you'll have to configure all widgets and other things manually folllowing the configuration page.
