Is it worth upgrading to 1.6, or sticking with 1.5?

Hi There,

i have been playing around a bit with 1.6, and even though it has some nice features, the lack of compatible extensions is a bit of a downer.

What are your opinions? Are you guys sticking with 1.5, or are there enough benefits to upgrade to 1.6?

Ciao

We're sticking with 1.5 for now until 1.6 has been running a while longer and all the problems fixed and more extensions are compatible with it.

Hi

I'm also suggesting 1.5 for bigger projects. Anyway I'm using 1.6 if only extentions for it are in propper version.

Given how long it took some quite major extensions to catch up with 1.5 I wouldnt look to jump anytime soon, think of your own time.

J1.5 is stable and almost anything useful is native 1.5, and anything youre used to using you will have built up familiarity and experience thereof.

Apply the same comparison for 1.6, look at every last thing youll need to add, if any of it isnt up to speed youre heading for problems.

J1.6 isnt some magic bullet, its just some failings of 1.5 fixed and some things improved to keep up with the times, unless theres some astounding reason to move up yet then dont be fooled by new and shiny.

Take 3 of your best sites, work or earnings or whatever, try and migrate them to 1.6, if you can manage it while making no sacrifices, no concessions to functionality or reliability and retain the current style or one thats an acceptable alternative then you are ready for 1.6, if not, steer clear for the time being.

As I've said before, with the way they are proposing to implement updates to Joomla over the next year or so to v1.8, I don't see any point whatsoever in bothering with either 1.6 or 1.7 for the moment, just wait for 1.8. No sooner have you got to grips with either 1.6 or 1.7 a new version will be out again that changes everything once again. This doesn't even take into account the constant "bug fixes" that will be coming out for 1.6/1.7 that we've seen so far nor does it take into account the incompatibility with the huge amount of components/modules/plugins that is currently out there.

We're sticking to 1.5 for the moment . . . :)

For certain clients, J1.6 is compelling, especially due to the new permissioning and categories features. These are clients we had to reject previously or use Drupal, because J1.5 simply didn't have these basic enterprise features. As long as we have a decent editor, Extplorer, a few great templates (thanks, Gavick), and some key extensions like Mosets Tree and Ignite Gallery as examples, we're fine.

For clients that need a lot of specialized extensions, like DT Register or JomSocial, or need a vast variety of templates to choose from, we're sticking with J1.5. Right now, our new development is 50/50. Good solid reasons to use either depending on client needs.

And J1.6 has been extremely stable for us, much better at this stage than J1.5 at a similar stage, so the argument that the stability curve will follow that of J1.5 is plain wrong.

It is worth upgrading to 1.6 (if possible) since I can use 'Gavern Framework';) .
I love it.
