Register button showing even when mod is unpublished

I have a problem with the register button in appSite template. I want to turn off the button. I have been able to turn off the button so it will not appear when I take the site offline and log-in as super administrator, but when the site is online the "Register" text appear. When I click on the text a pop-up window appears with some large text that just says "register". i have unpublished the mo_gk_register and have also disabled user registration in the Joomla settings. Any ideas?
