I added the code for the social icons to a custom html module but nothing appears. (I know I have to change the links to my own site but I was just testing it). When I click save the code disappears and is no longer entered into the module.

Hi

Code: Select all
<i></i>

is a HTML5 code and not all editors can recognise it as a valid code, so before making changes to such code please make sure You are using an editor which supports HTML5 or disable using editor at all.

Where are the g+, facebook, twitter icons stored so I can call them directly rather than using a class.

Hi

They are included into a font. Those are not images. There is a lot of icons to choose from https://www.google.pl/search?q=social+i ... 80&bih=593 You can use them as images instead.
