Hi

You can ask or search our forum for instruction how to change/edit elements, but since I do not know which element You have in mind I do not know where to start. Please show me what You want to change and I'll tell You how or where.

I agree. A basic step by step guide for beginners would save us time, and back and forth, and searching for a post that relates to a question.
thanks.

Hi

But I still do not know what You have in mind. Most of users only download template, install it, changing to the default joomla template and than move throught the configuration to set logo, width, fonts, etc. There is no special order to this. You can always get back to settings if You have missed something.

I'd say a basic step by step for the basics: after a beginner has installed the Quickstart template.

Perhaps it covers how to add a logo, how to edit images, how to change the navigation bar. How to remove articles and modules you don't need.

For example, other templates i've used i found a YouTube video. The video started with the Nav bar - how to add and change the menu, and alter it. Then explained the logo - sizing and positioning. Then adding a plugin and adding icons. Then creating a slide show - adding the images. and by the end, after one hour a very simple, but correct website was created. Beginners need a jumpstart.

I've posted about 5 or 6 questions since last weekend, and little by little I'm getting replies from Support and am building a site. 3 questions posted on Wednesday haven''t been answered yet. A basic "how to' would save a beginner time.

Thank you,

Hi,
my name is Pawel I'm moderator and author of our documentation page (link is in my footer) and 8 books about Joomla and other CMS.
I understand your request.
Some facts:
We have over 290 articles how to use & customize our products and Joomla. Many aspects of using them are described very well.

I was thinking about real guide step by step... but there are few problems:
1) We can not clone books - so how to use Joomla you have to learn by your own. I suppose that books about Joomla are also available in your native language.
2) Each template is different and still every months we have new one.
3) I always suggest to use Quickstart as test page not working page, so sometimes it's better to have two Joomla's
4) There are two stable edition of Joomla 2.5 and 3.2 - so if I will show screenshots only from J3.2 users of J2.5 won't be happy.

I suggest to play with empty Joomla at the beginning then build your real page. Start from small one, learn how to add articles , categories delete them, add new menu etc.
- using quickstart is like customizing a sport car - it could be very hard if your just starting your adventure with it (Joomla).

p.s.
I will try soon create more guides in this category: http://www.gavick.com/documentation/cat ... tutorials/

Thank you

I appreciate you explaining. I don't completely agree, but I do thank you for explaining your opinion.

It's important to hear the customer's viewpoint. That's why I was asking about a guide and trying to explain the customer's viewpoint. You have written the documentation page and 8 books about Joomla and other CMS so this comes a lot easier to you than me. I have experience with Joomla. I am very good at self-teaching. I built a site in Joomla (it took about 3 or 4 hours). I understand articles, modules and the basics.

I chose Joomla for this website because it should be easy and user-friendly to set up. I chose Gavick (I compared and contacted several template providers) and chose a cool template. It has been more complicated and less straightforward than previous experiences. It is taking me so long to figure out little nuances. And still is still not ready. I wanted a nice looking, modern site - one page - up quickly. I'm not sure what to do now., Keep trying or switch.

You have a lot of documentation, and the forum. To search and find the right question and answer is time consuming. I would think there would be an easier way. A start up guide for each template. And include something like what you wrote above: "I suggest you don't use the quickstart for the site". Maybe I missed it but I did not see that recommendation anywhere when I was downloading.

I guess I'm the only one with this request for a startup guide

Thanks for your reply.

Hi

I understand Your opinion and I just want You to know that You may ask me any question You want. Problem with step by step guide is that as You have mentioned there are ppl with different levels of knowledge. That's why we have choosen a more individual approach via forum to help solve problems, But Your question about a process of making website is a little too wide. I do not know what You expect from the site to be like, so steps can be different for every user.

I can see that you don't agree, or perhaps I"m not explaining it well, but if you're interested in reading them, I'll share two more suggestions to help give the perspective of a customer using your templates.

All websites require certain basics: a homepage, a navigation bar, usually a logo, and link from that nav bar either to interior pages or another area on the home page. Also websites usually have images. I wanted to start a small simple website (but have it look great and professional), I wanted to get the site up and expand later after 3-6 months. Most start ups want to do this, too.

If Gavick provided a simple one page start up guide for each template - it would save your customers a lot of time, and time you moderators spend on this forum. That simple start guide could perhaps include:
1- here is how you add a logo, change it's size and position in the XXX template and explain it
2- here is how you change the images in the slide show in the XXX template and explain it
3- etc.
4- Good luck and for any further questions, please go to the forum and ask

I'll continue to build my site and either contact the moderators with questions (you are very helpful), or find help elsewhere.

regards,t
