K2 Category 2 column layout - image sizes

This is driving me crazy.
I have a page that is a K2 Category 2 column layout with no leading item. The first item image is always larger(574px × 444px) and all of the others are 554px × 428px. If I set another item as first it will have a larger image than it did when it was further down page. I think this is a K2 issue, because the CSS is identical for all of the images
can someone please see if they help
