Would you please explain how I edit the 'GET CONNECTED!
COME AND JOIN OUR COMMUNITY. EXPAND YOUR NETWORK AND GET TO KNOW NEW PEOPLE!' text that is overlayed on the image of the jomsocial frontpage.

Hi,
You will find it inside: languages/en-GB/en-GB.com_community.ini file, like many others phrases.
It means check JomSocial language front-end file.
or use Joomla Language override system.

I fully understand that's why I suggested you second solution, remember?
Joomla have Language Override (in Language Manager) where you should use phrase : COM_COMMUNITY_HERO_PARAGRAPH
and your own text. Easy, if not ... use JomSocial Official Support.
