Trouble with Child themes

Hi there,

I'm having trouble with the child theme override functions; I've done some searching around and I found the fix to gavern/base.php to get JSON files working (made the change at line 393) , however it seems that changes I make to PHP files in the child theme are not being reflected.

JSON is working fine: e.g I made some changes to gavern/config/en_US/template.json and those changes are reflected in the admin.

Changes I have made to gavern/layouts/template.php have not been reflected.

Issue in both Chrome & Safari (caches turned off) so I don't think it's anything silly like that.
