I urgently need to remove the word "home" from the home page of my site

Probably you see 'Home' from menu name, please go to menu item configuration and disable showing title on page. More details you will find here on brand new J! documentation page http://docs.joomla.org/Help31:Menus_Menu_Item_Menu_Item_Heading

I've provided you a URL where there is complete tutorial how to disable this text that you see. Did you check the menu item settings?
